How to Measure Light in Your Home for Houseplants
"Bright indirect light" is the most repeated and least explained instruction in plant care. Here is what it actually means in your rooms.
“Bright indirect light” appears on almost every plant label and is almost never explained. It is also the instruction people most often get wrong, because human vision adapts to a huge range of brightness and plants do not.
Your eyes are the problem
Walk from outside into a living room and it feels dim for a moment, then normal. Your pupils have adjusted, your visual system has recalibrated, and the room now looks “bright”.
In actual light energy, that room might be delivering less than 2% of what was falling on the pavement outside. A plant experiences that difference directly, with no adaptation.
This is why “it’s a really bright room” is not reliable information about whether a plant will thrive there.
The three tests
1. The shadow test
The most useful method, and it costs nothing. On a bright day around midday, hold your hand about a foot above a sheet of white paper where you are thinking of putting the plant.

2. The reading test
Simpler still: at midday with no lamps on, could you comfortably read a paperback in that spot?
- Easily, for an hour → good light
- Possible but you’d rather have a lamp → medium
- You would turn a lamp on → low light, regardless of how bright it feels
3. A phone light meter
Free light meter apps give a rough lux reading. Phone sensors are not calibrated instruments, but they are useful for comparing spots in your own home.

For reference, an overcast day outdoors is around 10,000 lux and full sun is over 100,000. That gap is why even a bright window is a fairly dim place from a plant’s perspective.
Window direction
In the northern hemisphere:
- South-facing — the brightest, direct sun for much of the day. Ideal for succulents, cacti and citrus; tropicals need a sheer curtain or a few feet of distance.
- East-facing — gentle direct sun in the morning, bright indirect the rest of the day. The best general-purpose window for houseplants.
- West-facing — indirect in the morning, intense direct sun in the afternoon. Hotter and harsher than east; watch for scorch.
- North-facing — no direct sun, steady indirect light all day. Good for ferns, calatheas and low-light tolerant plants.
Reverse north and south in the southern hemisphere.
Obstructions matter as much as direction. A south window behind a large tree or a balcony overhang may deliver less than an unobstructed north one.
Distance is everything
This is the most underestimated factor. Light intensity falls off roughly with the square of the distance from the window.

A plant on a windowsill and the same plant across the room are in completely different environments, even though both spots look bright to you. Moving a struggling plant three feet closer to a window is often the entire fix.
What “indirect” means
Indirect light is bright light that does not fall directly on the leaves as a beam of sun. Sources:
- Light from a large area of visible sky (not the sun itself)
- Sun filtered through a sheer curtain
- Sun bounced off a light-coloured wall
The practical test is whether the sun’s disc is shining onto the leaves. If a beam falls directly on the foliage for more than an hour or so, that is direct light — fine for succulents, potentially scorching for tropicals.
Reading light off the plant
Plants report their own light conditions:
Too little:
- Long bare stretches of stem between leaves — legginess
- New leaves smaller than old ones
- Variegation fading to plain green
- Growth stalled for months
- Leaning hard toward the window
Too much:
- Bleached, pale or tan patches on the leaves facing the light
- Leaves curling away from the source
- Crisp brown scorch marks, usually on the sunward side
Seasonal change
Winter light in temperate regions can be a fifth or less of summer light, and the days are much shorter. Many plants that thrive in a spot in July are struggling by January.
Two adjustments help:
- Move plants closer to windows in winter, and back once spring light returns.
- Add a grow light. A basic LED on a timer for 10–12 hours a day costs very little to run and completely solves winter stretching. For succulents in northern climates it is close to essential.

The most reliable way to succeed is to choose plants for the light you actually have, rather than buying the plant you want and hoping the corner will do.

A basic LED grow light on a timer for 10–12 hours a day costs very little to run and reliably solves stretched, leggy growth in rooms where no window is bright enough. They are close to essential for succulents and other high-light plants in northern climates through winter.
